Sam Schumacher to take over as Pioneers head baseball coach

Schumacher becomes the tenth head coach in the history of the program.

THIEF RIVER FALLS, MN, Feb., 27, 2018 – Northland Community & Technical College has named Sam Schumacher as the new head baseball coach. Schumacher joins the Pioneers from Dakota Wesleyan University where he has spent the last two seasons as the assistant baseball coach and recruiting coordinator.

In addition to his experience on the field, NCTC athletics director, Mike Curfman, is eager to see how Schumacher’s strong knowledge of the game will show during the season.

“We are excited to welcome Sam to the Pioneers’ family as our next head baseball coach,” said Curfman. “He is a very good communicator and has a strong understanding of the game. I look forward to watching his team compete this spring.”

As Schumacher prepares for his first season coaching at NCTC, he is looking forward to watching the team grow, fostering leadership skills, and setting the team up for success.

“My coaching philosophy is built off of love, communication, hard work, and discipline. Those are some qualities that can bring the best out of people. Ultimately, we’re developing these young men on and off the field to be better than when they came into the program.” Schumacher added, “I’m excited to watch the team grow as the season goes on. We have the potential to be able to excel in multiple facets of the game. At the end of the day leadership from the players will determine what kind of success we have. Those same qualities we preach for baseball are transferable to education and the rest of life.”

Schumacher grew up playing football, basketball and baseball in Casselton, ND, for Central Cass High School. He went on to play college baseball at Dakota Wesleyan University (DWU) in Mitchell, SD, and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in sports management. Schumacher was a 4-year contributor, receiving an All-Conference selection during his senior year. Following graduation, Sam was a graduate assistant for 2 years at DWU and worked as a recruiting coordinator and hitting/infield coach, while earning his master’s in education and administration policies. He helped guide the 2015 DWU team to the Great Plains Athletic Conference Postseason Tournament Championship. He also has several years experience as a head coach in the Pioneer League, which is a wood bat collegiate summer league based out of Minnesota, Iowa and South Dakota.

The first game of the season is scheduled for Saturday, March 3, 2018. The Pioneers will take on the Northern Oklahoma Jets at 12:00 PM in Tonkawa, OK.
