Spotlight on Service to Community; Northland to Host TRF State of the City Event

The 3rd annual event will be held on March 21 from 5-7 p.m.

March 13, 2019 – The Thief River Falls Chamber of Commerce, City of Thief River Falls, and Northland Community & Technical College will host its 3rd annual State of the City address and social on March 21, 2019. The event will be held on Northland’s Thief River Falls campus. A social with light appetizers and cash bar will begin at 5:00 p.m. in the Gunderson Commons. The event program and presentations will begin at 6:00 p.m. in Northland’s Theatre. This year’s event theme Service to Community will highlight the city’s emergency management services (EMS). In addition, area community service and nonprofit organizations will be exhibiting in the commons.

Representatives from area EMS will present on the state of their departments and give updates on their work within the community. Dick Wittenberg TRF Chief of Police, Ray Kuznia, Pennington County Sheriff, Marty Semanko TRF Fire Department Co-Fire Chief, and Kali Muchow, TRF Ambulance Operations Manager have been invited to be featured speakers.

We’re also very proud that Northland not only works in partnership with these public service entities, but we can also boast that a large part of the public service workforce was trained by us!

“There’s not much that’s more important to a community than the public services it provides its residents. As a good community partner we feel it’s a part of our mission to provide a platform for these entities to communicate the latest regarding their services.” expresses Northland President Dennis Bona, “We’re also very proud that Northland not only works in partnership with these public service entities, but we can also boast that a large part of the public service workforce was trained by us!”

“Often time public servants such as those in the emergency management field are forgotten until they are needed in a crisis. But in fact, their jobs are often 24/7, 365 days a year. There are many tasks they perform behind the scenes; training on new safety equipment, educating groups of children or adults on the importance of smoke detectors, or teaching CPR to community members,” explains TRF Mayor Brian Holmer, “It is also crucial they are able to communicate with the public on potential hazards such as clearing snow off of roofs or the dangers of ice on the river. EMS often see people at their worst, but they handle these crisis situations with grace, compassion, and professionalism. All of this provides a sense of safety and security to our citizens.”

The event will also include an opportunity to support the State of the City Scholarship. This 3rd annual scholarship has provided funds for a Lincoln High School graduate attending Northland. Blake Widing, the 2018 State of the City Scholarship recipient, received a $460 award.

This event is free and open to the public. For more event information, please visit northlandcollege.edu/sotc2019.
