This week, high school juniors and seniors had the unparalleled opportunity to explore the healthcare field up close during RiverView Health’s annual Scrubs Camp. Along the way, the students got an in-depth look at health education at Northland Community & Technical College.
Six of Northland’s health care programs, Practical Nursing, Registered Nursing, Physical Therapist Assistant, Occupational Therapy Assistant, Radiologic Technology, and Respiratory Therapy, participated in the camp. Faculty and students from these programs gave in-depth testimony on career opportunities, shared first-hand accounts of their journeys, and held a Q and A session. Participants also received a campus tour and received info on course and program requirements.
“The scrubs camp participants were really engaged and excited about the various health careers,” shared Kari Koenig, Director of Northland’s RN program. “It was wonderful to collaborate with Riverview Health and enhance the healthcare career exploration experience for these high school students.”
The most popular part of the experience was the unique opportunity participants had to dive into hands-on activities and demonstrations, like caring for a patient in the nursing simulator, learning how to wrap an ankle, testing reflexes, and measuring joint flexibility. They also experimented with the different healthcare equipment used on the job.
Hanna Brouse, a student from Crookston High School, said, “I was hoping to learn more info on the college and more about the programs they have-and I did! What I enjoyed most was seeing the nursing program simulator mannequins. It was cool to see what the students use to learn.”
“I enjoyed getting a hands-on experience and seeing the different equipment used in each healthcare field,” shared Kate Larson from Fertile Beltrami High School.
“The camp was a great opportunity for area high school students to learn more about different health careers and the healthcare programs available at Northland,” said Justin Berry, Director of Northland’s Physical Therapist Assistant program. “Faculty designed some great exploratory sessions for the students related to the participating programs.”
