Northland Offers Free Certified Nursing Assistant Training

Long-term care facilities need help amid shortage of CNAs.

Northland Community & Technical College announces session dates for free Certified Nursing Assistant Training. Funding provided by Minnesota’s Next Generation Nursing Assistant initiative will provide registration and fees, uniform, books, and materials, to complete the 75-hour hybrid course at the East Grand Forks campus.

Students who successfully complete class hours and assignments will be eligible for the Nursing Assistant Competency Exam at no cost. Applicants must pass the written and skills competency exam to earn placement on the Minnesota Nursing Assistant Registry. This placement is typically required before or within the first four months of employment with healthcare facilities in our region.

Free registration is open now for Next Generation Nursing Assistant class; no prior experience or prerequisite education is required. Students will participate in online lectures via Zoom on December 2, 5, 6, and 7. Students attend in-person lectures and labs on December 8, 9, 12, 13, 15, and 16.

Students must be 16 years old or older and eligible to work in the U.S. by the completion of the course. Future employers will require background checks, and many require applicants to be 18 years of age or older. The class is limited to 20 participants. Applicants could qualify for additional funds needed to complete the class and certification exam by February 2023.

The course is the second round of the Minnesota State effort to answer staffing shortages for entry-level healthcare workers, specifically in Veterans homes and long-term care facilities.
