Accountant / Payroll Specialist

The Minnehaha County Auditors Office is looking for two Accountants to join our team of professionals! Our Accountants enjoy a variety of responsibilities within the office including financial and official recordkeeping, assisting with the election processes, and assisting the public. One of the positions will also focus on biweekly payroll. EXAMPLES OF DUTIES INCLUDE: The Accountant performs a variety of professional and technical accounting work in the receipt, disbursements and transfer of funds received by the Minnehaha County Auditors Department. Duties may include reconciling general ledger accounts, reviewing records for accuracy, preparing billings, accounting for capital assets and assisting with annual budget preparation. Our Accountant / Payroll Specialist will also process biweekly payroll and generate payroll checks and direct deposits. Compute deductions, prepare invoices, and maintain payroll records. Analyze employee time entry batches and calculate pay adjustments. Verify statements for insurance expenses and premiums. Make online payments for payroll deductions. Report and deposit taxes. Assist the Auditors office in developing and enhancing payment methods that would best serve the payroll and payment processes of the office. Both positions would be expected to compile and prepare data for other departments, County Commissioners and outside agencies. Support election processes by providing information to the general public, processing data and information, and assisting during elections as needed. Perform other Auditors office duties as assigned. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelors degree and one year of experience in accounting, business, finance, or related field; associates degree plus three years of experience; or a bachelors degree and one year of relevant experience; or a comparable combination of education and experience. Must successfully complete pre-employment background process. Knowledge of the principles and methods of general accounting and/or payroll. Skill in operating standard office equipment with speed and accuracy. Working knowledge of Excel software. Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers, other agencies, and the public. Ability to maintain professional appearance and demeanor. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Knowledge of accounting principles, fund accounting, and general knowledge of payroll administration preferred.
