Licensure & Certification Disclosures

If you are a student or prospective student interested in an academic program that may lead to professional licensure or certification, you should be aware of certain policies or information important for your success.

Overview

Northland Community & Technical College offers several programs that lead to professional licensure and/or certification necessary for employment in the state of Minnesota and/or North Dakota. States vary in what professions they require to be licensed and in how licensure functions. Some states require an individual to graduate from an approved program, while others require an individual to meet the certification requirements of a national organization. As a result of such differences, completion of a program may not meet the licensure or certification requirements in certain states.

If you are planning to seek employment in another state, it is important to know the state’s specific licensure or certification requirements before enrolling in a program. Students should contact the appropriate licensing agency in the state in which they plan to seek employment to determine requirements and ensure program compatibility. Alternatively, you may contact the Northland personnel with direct oversight of the academic program you are interested in for licensure and certification requirements.

State Authorization

Northland is a member of the National Council for State Authorization Reciprocity Agreement (NC-SARA), which allows colleges to offer distance learning programs and coursework to residents in states other than Minnesota. NC-SARA membership does not grant reciprocity or exempt members from state professional licensing requirements. As a result, licensing requirements in Minnesota may not be recognized as sufficient to obtain a license in any other state. You can learn more by visiting https://nc-sara.org/. If you are planning to enroll in one of Northland’s fully online program options, please visit our Online Program and Degree Licensure and Disclosures

Location

Per the U.S. Department of Education Code of Federal Regulations (Regulation 34 CFR 668.43 (a)(5)(v)), we must disclose whether Northland programs will meet the educational requirements for professional licensure or certification in any U.S. state or territory. Northland makes every effort to ensure information about educational requirements for licensure or certification is current; however, state requirements may change. Separate from educational requirements, state licensure boards may require applicants to complete professional examinations, background checks, years of professional experience, jurisprudence exams, training, etc. If you are planning to pursue professional licensure or certification in a state other than Minnesota, it is strongly recommended that you contact the appropriate licensing entity in that state to seek information and guidance regarding licensure or certification requirements before beginning an academic program.

Programs Not Listed

If you have questions regarding any program not listed on this page, please contact the Northland Dean of Health, Public Services, and Technical Programs.

How To Use This Information

If you are interested in enrolling in one of the programs listed below but the state you intend to seek licensure is listed under the “does not meet” or “no determination” headings, you may contact that state licensing board and/or the Northland Dean of Health, Public Services, and Technical Programs. Northland makes every effort to ensure information about educational requirements for licensure or certification is current; however, state requirements may change. Northland will update this information annually. Separate from educational requirements, state licensure boards may require applicants to complete professional examinations, background checks, years of professional experience, jurisprudence exams, training, etc.

Program Licensure Disclosures

For our programs listed below, click each program title to review the Professional Licensure Disclosure. This will indicate one of the three options: a list of states for which the program does meet licensure requirements, a list of states for which the program does not meet the requirements for licensure, and a list of states for which no determination has been made.

Please note licensure determinations reflect accurate information about each program to the best of our knowledge; however, the decision to grant a license or certification is ultimately the purview of the state. Only state licensing agencies or boards can determine whether an academic program meets or partially meets educational requirements for licensure. Northland cannot guarantee an individual’s attainment of any professional licensure or certification, in any field, in any jurisdiction.

Notes:

Our law enforcement program is intended to prepare students to successfully pass the Minnesota Peace Office Standards and Training (POST) board examination. Minnesota is unique in its licensing system for peace officers. Most other states retain some form of academy training followed by certification of the individual officer. Minnesota requires those aspiring to work in law enforcement to complete an educational program and pass a state board exam. Licensing itself only occurs when eligible candidates are appointed to a peace officer position and certain selection standards are met. Licensing is a cooperative process between the POST Board, the hiring agency and the candidate (https://dps.mn.gov/entity/post/licensing/Pages/default.aspx). In some cases state agencies allow people with peace officer experience from another state to meet licensure requirements by taking a reciprocity exam. You will need to contact the appropriate licensing agency in the state you are interested in being licensed in order to determine if there are reciprocity exams available.
