Application Process by Student Type

Everyone has a unique educational journey ahead. Start your application process by selecting the student type that most closely matches your needs.

First-Year Student

You’re a first-year student if you’re applying to Northland for the academic year immediately following high school or haven’t attended college since your high school graduation. 

Complete the following to apply to Northland Community & Technical College as a first-year student. Some programs may have additional requirements for admission.

Star ID and Password: Before you begin the application, you will be prompted to create your Star ID and password.  

For Online Students: After you submit your online application, a Distance Minnesota Advisor will reach out to you. For more information about online learning, please visit the Distance Minnesota website.

Submit Required Documentation

  • High School Transcripts or GED Transcripts. Contact your high school to learn how to request an official copy of your high school transcript or GED certificate and have it sent to the Northland admissions office. You will need to send a transcript at the time of application and an official final copy after graduation. Some high schools may require a signed consent of release form before they send out your transcript, so be sure to check what is needed. If you need a GED transcript, you can look up the requirements for your state online to find out how to request it to be sent to Northland admissions.
  • Immunization Records. Remember to complete and return the immunization form, which is required by Minnesota law for colleges.


Returning Student

You’re a returning student if you previously enrolled at any Northland campus and have been away for more than one semester.

Complete the following to reapply to Northland Community & Technical College as a returning student. Some programs may have additional requirements for admission.

Submit Required Documentation

Students will need to update any records that have changed since their last date of attendance. This may include immunization records, change of address information, new transcripts, or other required documents.

  • Do you have College Transfer Credits? If you’ve taken classes at another Minnesota State College or University and want to transfer those credits to Northland, you’ll need to fill out an eTranscript Request Form. This helps us evaluate your previous coursework. If you have other transcripts from different schools, please send those in as well. Lastly, remember to complete and return the immunization form, which is required by Minnesota law for colleges.

Transfer Student

You’re currently studying or have studied at another college/university after graduating from high school and wish to attend Northland.



Post-Secondary Enrollment (PSEO) Student

You are an eligible Minnesota high school sophomore, junior, or senior seeking to enroll in coursework through Northland.

Military Student or Veteran

International Student

You’re not a U.S. citizen/permanent resident but are seeking a degree, diploma, or certificate.
