Northland Community & Technical College has been awarded funding through the Minnesota Office of Higher Education’s Use of Force Training Grant, expanding access to advanced, no-cost training for licensed Minnesota peace officers. The initiative will be delivered through Northland’s Workforce Development Solutions (WDS), which partners with regional employers and public agencies to provide responsive, workforce-focused training.
“Through Workforce Development Solutions, Northland is expanding access to high-quality, real-world training that supports law enforcement professionals across our region,” said Kirsten Michalke, Dean of Workforce Development. “Providing this training at no cost removes barriers for agencies and ensures officers are equipped with current best practices.”
The grant will support hands-on, scenario-based training designed to strengthen decision-making, communication, and the lawful application of force in both routine and high-risk situations. The in-service training emphasizes realistic exercises, de-escalation techniques, and officer safety.
The first training session is scheduled for Monday, June 15, 2026, at Northland’s Thief River Falls campus. The one-day workshop offers eight POST Continuing Education (CE) credits at no cost to participating officers. Additional sessions will be offered through June 30, 2027, expanding access and strengthening regional partnerships.
WDS will coordinate outreach, registration, and program delivery in partnership with Northland instructors David Lovly and Randy Sondrol to ensure accessibility and strong participation. As part of Minnesota State, Northland remains committed to delivering workforce-centered education that meets the evolving needs of public safety professionals and the communities they serve.
