Register for the 8-hour certification class if you are a Pilot Car Driver with an expired Minnesota certification, have never been licensed, or were licensed in another state.
The certification is valid for four years. Upon expiration, you are able to extend your license for one additional four-year period by completing the 4-hour recertification course within 90 days of expiration. When that four-year renewal license expires, the full 8-hour certification is required again.
This 8-hour certification course curriculum includes:
- Driver requirements
- Vehicle requirements
- Permitting and reading an over dimensional load permit
- Pilot/Escort vehicle positioning and maneuvering
- Authority while escorting, flagging and traffic control
- Insurance
- Pre-trip planning and meeting
- Communication
- Height pole usage
- Liability issues
- Ground clearance
- Route surveys and how to conduct them
- Hours of service
- Railroad grade crossing safety
Students must provide a recent (no more than 30 days older than course start) CERTIFIED driving record for this class.
