April 1, 2022 – Northland student, April McGee, has been elected as Vice President of Communications for the Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) Honor Society’s Minn-Kota region. McGee was chosen for this leadership role at the PTA Minn-Kota regional meeting in Rochester, MN, March 18-20.
McGee, originally from Crookston, MN, is a member of the Northland Beta Nu chapter of PTK and is a student in the Administrative Professional program with a double major in Digital Marketing.
“April is an impressive person. She is dedicated to her family, community, academics, classmates, and club members. She is always willing to help others and engage in discussions in and out of the classroom,” revealed Bobbie Taylor Northland, Administrative Professional Instructor. “April serves as the club president for Beta Nu Kappa and takes on leadership roles in many of her classes. She has also dedicated time to serving on the Administrative Professionals Advisory Council as the student representative.”
In her new role, McGee will represent the Minn-Kota region at Catylist, PTK’s national conference in Denver, CO, April 7-9. Catalyst brings together members, advisors, and their supporters for professional development and includes immersive opportunities for personal and professional development, college transfer guidance, speakers, the election of leaders, and networking opportunities.
“I am looking forward to developing my leadership and communication skills in my position as Regional VP of Communications, shared McGee. “I would also like to walk away with lasting relationships on both a personal and professional level while being able to make an impact on a larger scale.”
PTA Minn-Kota’s regional officers serve as the public face of the region. Officers are responsible for relationship development between the region and local chapters and will have the opportunity to develop leadership skills with subsequent training and participation in regional and national events.
“April McGee is what Phi Theta Kappa is all about. She’s driven, dedicated, and wants to make a difference,” stated Jason Pangiarella, Student Success Coordinator & Advisor at Northland. “As VP of Communications for the PTK Minn-Kota region, April will help modernize the region’s communication strategy and techniques using skills and principles she’s learned at Northland.”.
In addition to her regional duties, McGee will be completing an Honors in Action project. Honors in Action was developed by PTK to support its mission to develop opportunities for college students to grow as scholars and leaders. This project helps participants use what is learned in the classroom to research and solve real challenges facing your college and community.
“April is already thinking of ways to initiate an Honors in Action project for 2022. This year’s theme is The Art and Science of Play,” Pangiarella explained. “This theme will help chapters explore campus projects that increase student engagement in activities and programs of a co-circular and extracurricular nature.”
Phi Theta Kappa is the premier honor society recognizing the academic achievement of students at associate degree-granting colleges and helping them to grow as scholars and leaders. The Society is made up of more than 3.5 million members and nearly 1,300 chapters in nine nations.
“I joined PTK because I love socializing, and this organization offered me the opportunity to meet new people and make new friends from all walks of life,” continued McGee. “I also loved the idea of being able to help those around me. I wanted to be a part of something that was bigger than myself, and PTK offered me an opportunity to do just that.”
